AFC West End continued their promising league form in 2012 with a 3-2 victory away at Red Lion Dunston. The game was the fourth between the two sides this season, AFC winning two previously and losing one via a penalty shootout. After keeping the same team line-up a week previously John Purdy was forced into shuffling his pack with Harry Rickels, Tom Cole, Sam McDonnell and James Smith all absent from the team that beat AFC Harpars. This gave opportunities to Lee Matsell, Mike O’Keeffe, Dan Arden and James Whittingham who all came into the side.

A friend of club veterans Sam McDonnell and Joe Harper from their Norwich days Lee joined AFC West End after moving to the University of Lincoln in September 2006. A lively and versatile player Lee looked equally assured as either a forward or as full-back. Unfortunately chances were limited up front due to the established partnership of McDonnell and Dungworth, however when called upon Lee produced some telling contributions for the club, including three goals from just eight starts for the club. Sadly for all concerned Lee moved to Stonebow Athletic in 2007 before he really had opportunity to cement himself in the West End side.
