By George; West End Hit Six
AFC West End made the short away trip up the hill to Sobraon to face George & Dragon with a couple of late additions having brought the side up to a bare XI. Things were to get worse before they got better as well with Martin Robinson aggravating a foot injury in the warm-up and having to don the gloves for the morning, Liam Tonks taking over at left back. Thankfully for the Beers this match proved to be one of the lesser tests they will face this season.
West End were in control from the start with George & Dragon failing to test Robinson before the visitors took the lead. A long lofted ball forward from Sam Mcdonnell finding Dave Capps as the forward got in behind the back line to score. Sadly this initial lead was short lived as the home side broke down their right and a firm strike from just outside the area left Robinson with no chance for an instant equaliser. The Beers soon re-established their stamp on the game though and went on to add three more goals before the break as Ryan Smith grabbed his first West End goal and Sam McDonnell and Joe Harper also got their names on the score sheet.
Kicking into the wind in the second half West End didn’t flow as wella s they had before the break and needed Robinson to be quick off his line to thwart a through ball on a couple of occasions. Though under a little more pressure at their own end and briefly forced to play with ten men as Harper limped off for treatmnet, they were still able to add two more goals of their own. Jack McDonnell grabbed his third goal of the season with an excellent dipping effort from the edge of the area, whilst brother Sam McDonnell struck his third of the game as he took his time over a through ball before eventually rifling home a ‘Boothman-esque’ finish to round off a great win.
