Ten days after their own playing season ended in acrimonious circumstances AFC West End’s final league placing has now been confirmed. After two brusing encounters this season the Beers cannot have expected Tavern FC to do them any favours but that they did, in their final match of the season against Welton S&SC Reserves. Tavern’s 2-1 victory ensured that West End would not be caught by Welton and thus guaranteed AFC West End’s highest ever league finish.
AFC West End travelled to face AFC Harpars expecting to bring down the curtain on their best ever season with a fitting finale. However, the Beers’ collective bubble was burst with just ten minutes of the season remaining as a terrible injury to Stephen ‘Alf’ Pearce caused the match to be abandoned. Alf was on the wrong end of a mistimed challenge from one of the Harpars midfield that resulted in a broken tibula and fibula and will see him out of action for some time. Continue Reading
For the second time in less than four days a threadbare West End line-up produced another emphatic home win. West End didn’t start well, and under pressure they had Christian Sales to thank for not going behind as he turned one dipping effort over the bar. However, it was to be West End who took the lead as Bruce Garrod fed Jamie Lawrence with a neat flick and he made no mistake with a well-taken finish. Midway through the half it was all square again though as Woodhall got a deserved equaliser; the visitors’ forward finding space behind the makeshift West End backline to put the ball beyond Sales. AFC West End struck a blow for the local neighbourhood watch, and also gained revenge for a heavy opening day defeat with an impressive victory over promotion chasing Tavern FC. In front of a hostile travelling support West End were hampered midway through the first half as late lunge at captain Adie Gray forced him off for five minutes and an already depleted West End were forced to reshuffle to a back three. Despite being a man down the Beers took the lead as Dave Capps struck a dipping half-volley that arced over the Tavern keeper. Still the visitors were having more of the ball and drew level within five minutes as West End, back up to eleven men, were unable to clear a right wing cross and Tavern’s forward fired home from close range. West End’s late season promotion push suffered a set-back on the road with a 2-1 defeat at picturesque Welton, leading some to suggest that fishing balls from a stream with a corner flag is not ideal match preparation. On a small hard pitch the Beers struggled to impose themselves in the early stages with the ball rarely on the floor long enough to string any sort of passes together. Welton dealt with the conditions better and took a twentieth minute lead in bizarre circumstances; a high lifted cross from the left evaded those in the box but took a high enough bounce to balloon over Christian Sales and drop under the cross-bar.
