Opening Day Despair at Tavern

A disappointing afternoon at Bishop Grosseteste College ended with AFC West End suffering their first ever opening day defeat at the hands of Tavern FC. Most frustrating for West End was that they had started the much better side, coming close to an opening goal just minutes into the game as Joe Harper hit the post with a header. Jamie Lawrence also came close when put through on goal, but it was the hosts who struck against the run of play, their forward cutting in from the right before scoring with a low finish. Fixture Ammendments

With the new season now just days away AFC West End’s fixture list has undergone a slight makeover. The most pressing news is that the wait for the 2008/2009 season kick-off will now be a few hours longer as Sunday’s opening match at Tavern FC has been scheduled as an afternoon kick-off. As such AFC West End will now travel to Bishop Grosseteste College for a 1:30pm kick-off. Continue Reading

West End Up in Arms Against Joiners

After the impressive performance against Bailgate at the weekend West End’s pre-season preperations suffered a bit of a nosedive with defeat to Division Six Joiners Arms. In a nervy opening twenty minutes West End struggled to get to grips with the ball on a bobbly West Common surface. Although neither side really impressed it was the visitors who took the early initiative, the Joiners forward racing onto a short backpass from stand-in full back Rob Davies to open the scoring. West End Stump Bails for Five

West End got their pre-season back on track with a victory over Division Four Bailgate Athletic that was even more convincing than the score-line suggests. The Beers’ always looked in control of this match, despite going behind in the opening quarter of an hour, undone by the ball over the top. A goal down West End found their rhythm and did everything but find the net until eventually the equaliser came as Dave Capps latched onto a through ball and finished well for his third goal of pre-season. West End hit the bar twice in the first half through, but eventually found a second goal as Bruce Garrod cut in from the left for his first West End goal. However on occasion the Bailgate forwards were still causing problems and again they made the most of a long ball to level the scores before the break. Continue Reading

West End Suffer Wash Out at Washingborough

AFC West End’s pre-season took a downward turn with a heavy 5-1 defeat at Royal Oak Washingborough. What had looked to be The Beers toughest pre-season fixture on paper proved to be so on the undermarked long grass as Royal Oak who had played last season four levels above West End, made this superiority show in a tough friendly fixture. The home side raced into a two goal lead inside the opening ten minutes as West End struggled to get the ball down and play. Despite a couple of efforts on goal from Rich Brown, Dan Hill and Dave Capps the Beers’ attacks were sadly few and far between as Washingborough made use of the ball over the top to add two further goals before the break. Plough Inn Sturton 2-3 AFC West End

West End Reap What They Sow at Plough

A welcome start to pre-season preparations for AFC West End as they recorded a 3-2 win away at fellow Division 5 side Plough Inn Sturton.  A record away following of four followed ‘the beers’ squad north were rewarded with a hard fought victory in which West End twice came from behind. The Beers came close to taking the lead in spectacular fashion with only the crossbar denying new assistant manager Dave Capps a volleyed opening goal. Sam McDonnell also came close with a well struck shot from the edge of the box that flew millimetres wide, while the returning Jamie Lawrence was also proving a handful for the home defence, but the Plough keeper was doing well to keep the scores at bay. At the other end new West End keeper Liam Tonks made a number of fine saves but could do nothing about the opening goal as a quickly taken throw caught the unfamiliar West End back line napping and the hosts took full advantage with a far post header.
