Shades of the infamous Battle of Birchwood against Swan Athletic as West End lost out in a particularly frustrating game at Sudbrooke Drive. Not only were West End up against particularly physical opponents but they had to do so with one of their opponents refereeing as well. Never has the phrase “the ref gave us nothing” been more apt, than today as the home official spent the entire game on one touchline and rarely up with play.
Despite this West End took the lead as a Ben Sheehan clearance downfield was headed past his own keeper by a Brown Cow defender. West End were on the back foot for much of the rest of the game, and were indebted to Ben who made some fantastic saves to keep the home side at bay. Eventually Brown Cow found the net, not once, but twice to take the points, but the match ended in controversial circumstances. A horrific late and high challenge on Joe Harper went unpunished by the referee and sparked a confrontation amongst the players. With Joe unable to play-on and his team-mates unwilling to face anything more from their opponents West End persuaded the referee to blow for time. Another one of those why do we bother days.
Line-up: Ben Sheehan; Stephen Pearce, Adrian Gray, Glen Wilson, Jez Ashberry; Dave Capps, Sam Boothman (Jay Dann), Gav Sumner (James Dewurst), Dan Hill; Joe Harper (Dale Annous), Sam McDonnell
Man of the Match and Dick of the Day: no votes taken
Down to the bear eleven including a guest appearance from Simon Mowbray West End were always going to struggle against a strong and typically physical Monks Road side, and were behind from the outset as Monks Road broke in the first minute to fire past stand-in keeper Glen Wilson. West End fought back though and Jay Lawrence levelled late in the first half. However, in the second half West End were undone by some unnecessary physical approach from the Monks Road midfield and limited protection from the match referee as the visitors edged ahead again and then raced into a 4-1 lead. Dewy pulled a goal back for West End to set up a potentially nervous last few minutes, but the only further goal came from Monks Road who restored their three goal advantage.
Line-up (4-4-2): Glen Wilson; Stephen Pearce, Jay Dann, Gav Sumner, Jez Ashberry; Dave Capps, Sam Boothman, Ritchie Bates, James Dewhurst; Jamie Lawrence, Simon Mowbray
Man of the match: Gav Sumner (solid in unfamiliar defensive position) / Glen Wilson (made some good saves)
Dick of the day: Monks Road’s number 16 (the kit will be left outside Monks Road WMC)
After three successive defeats West End finally recorded their first win of 2008 with a narrow 1-0 home success over Potterhanworth. Aided by a cameo from Richard Ossai in goal West End managed to keep an all too rare clean sheet as well as Dave Capps’ strike sealed the points.
Line-up (4-3-3): Richard Ossai; Jay Dann, Adrian Gray, Glen Wilson (Dale Annous), Stephen Pearce; Sam Boothman (Jonny Dyas), Ritchie Bates, Gav Sumner; Dave Capps, Sam McDonnell, Dan Hill
Man of the match: Dave Capps
Dick of the day: the referee
Another make-shift line-up for West End who set off for this fixture with just nine men, guest appearances from Kieran and Richard Snape taking them to eleven. With Ben still injured Glen Wilson donned the gloves again, and kept West End in the match early on, saving twice from Woodcocks’ forward and once from Alf’s sliced clearance before he was eventually beaten by a penalty from the opposition’s goalkeeper. West End had struck the post with the match at 0-0 but it was to be as close as they came all game, and as they chased an equaliser the team lost its shape allowing Woodcocks to double their advantage with a well struck shot from the right channel. With little going West End’s way it was to prove a frustrating morning as the Beers crashed to their third successive defeat.
Line-up (4-4-2): Glen Wilson; Stephen Pearce, Adrian Gray, Jay Dann, Jez Ashberry; James Dewhurst, Sam Boothman, Richard Snape, Kieran; Dan Hill, Sam McDonnell
Man of the match: Adrian Gray
Dick of the day: Dan Hill / the referee
