Vulcan Bomb West End
A second cup exit in two weeks for West End as they left the Fred Quibel Junior Cup at the hands of Division Four leaders FC Vulcan. However, West End made their opponents work for their victory as they refused to roll over and hit their opponents with two late goals to come back from 4-1 down to 4-3 in the closing stages, John Moore, Rich Dungworth and Dave Capps all on the score sheet. However with bodies committed forward West End were beaten on the break and Vulcan retained their two goal cushion with a late strike to win 5-3.
Starting Line-up (4-4-2): Steve Graham; Dan Cain, Shaun Hepple, Mike Smith, Stephen Pearce; Jonny Dyas, Andy Kirk, Glen Wilson, John Moore; Dave Capps, Rich Dungworth
Substitute: Sam McDonnell
West End Hyked Out the Cup
Another chance for West End to test themselves against the division’s top side came in the second round of the Jock Mitchell Trophy. The opposition took the lead within the opening minute and continued to control the first half as they raced into a 4-0 lead before the break. Still West End can take encouragement from their second half performance, a goal from Sam McDonnel helping West End to match their opponents in the second period.
Starting Line-up (4-4-2): Matt Hinton; Jez Ashberry, Shaun Hepple, Mayur Patel, Jonny Dyas; John Moore, Glen Wilson, Gav Sumner, Phil Lodge; Lee Matsell, Rich Dungworth
Substitutes: Sam McDonnell, Dave Capps
Wind Swept and Disappointing
A frustrating afternoon for West End as they played Branston Reserves in a ridiculously strong gale that swept across the page forcing play to remain down one flank in both halves. The home side eventually got the ball into the centre of the field long enough to open the scoring and it was to prove the only goal of the match to stand. West End thought they had equalised as they threw bodies forward late in the game, however the Branston linesman flagged for an inexplicable offside (a player on the opposite side of the pitch to play) and the strike was ruled out. Frustration all round, particularly for Joe Harper who took his frustration out on the pitch… and broke his hand.
Starting Line-up (4-4-2): Matt Hinton; Stephen Pearce, Shaun Hepple, Mayur Patel, Lee Matsell; Jonny Dyas, Glen Wilson, Joe Harper, Phil Lodge; Sam McDonnell, Rich Dungworth
